God, Was that REALLY You?

There are countless mentions of God speaking to His people in the Bible, but my favorite example is the story of Elijah:

“Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave...
I Kings 19:11-13a (NLT)

It's funny how we're always looking for signs. We cry out to God asking Him to speak to us. When we have choices to make we look for a special prophecy, three confirmations, and a dream to confirm it. If God set up a big blinking sign saying DO THIS, we'd probably just ask, "Lord, show me that's really you."

I kid. Yet the essence rings true. We look for the obvious sometimes when God is not choosing that way to speak. We sometimes go to someone else hoping they'll hear from God for us, when all God wants is for us to go to Him in our quiet time alone.

We need to fine-tune our spirits to be more sensitive to the moving of God. We have to be ready to receive from Him in whatever manner He shows up, and have the faith to know that it is God who is talking when He speaks.

God shows up in many forms, and speaks to us in different ways. Yet, the more time you spend in His presence, the more trips you take to sit at His feet, and the more conversations you have with Him, God's voice will grow clearer and more distinct. Soon, you'll find yourself hearing Him the first time and not needing a follow-up or confirming sign. You'll know immediately that it was Him, and will be able to move forward accordingly.

So stop looking for more signs and get before God. Once you get to know the Source, you won't need the extras.
